‘It’s rare for directors to be friends’

Kunal Kohli gets candid on the split with Yash Raj, Bollywood friendships and not going to London for inspiration!
‘It’s rare for directors to be friends’
There have been rumours that Aamir Khan is starring in your next project.
I cant talk about it too much at this time, but there will be a formal announcement very soon. Im tying up with a major corporate house for a multi-film deal. Im quite excited about it, as our ways of doing business seem to match. I havent approached any actors yet, but Im in the process of writing two scripts.

So your split with Yash Raj Films is final, then?
Well, yes, we have parted ways. But its been entirely amicable. Were still good friends, but have just decided not to do business with each other. Theyre perfectly justified for wanting to make films in a certain way, and Im certainly entitled to my view.
Theres also buzz about you following Farhan Akhtars example and acting as well?
I dont know where these rumours come from! Ive been approached for a few projects, but I dont trust any director or writer enough at this point to commit myself. The project, if I ever accept one, will have to be handled properly.
Which recent Bollywood movies have you liked?
I absolutely loved Rock On!!. I walked out of the premiere and just hugged Farhan, for like five minutes, because I was so happy for him. Im very honest about these things so Farhan got quite emotional too at that point. Its quite rare, I think, in Bollywood, for directors to be genuine friends. But that way, Ive been quite lucky because Im on excellent terms with a lot of them Vipul Shah and Madhur (Bhandarkar) to name a few and love to sit and brainstorm with them.

What do you to relax and unwind, when youre not making movies?
I watch them! I also watch a lot of American and British television shows Weeds, Desperate Housewives... And I love gadgets of all kinds. Im constantly on the lookout for something new to play around with I recently bought a voice recorder, and record ideas for scenes and movies whenever I get them.
Is there anything special you do to get into that creative zone?
No, not really. Its pretty much a continuous process. I dont go to London so that I can write or anything! (laughs)
